Today, I’m headed for a picnic at a secret spot on Mount Entoto, the highest peak overlooking Addis Ababa. But, to get there first, I have to take a combination of four minibuses. The whole fare combined probably costs around a dollar, with the third bus stopping in an interesting market area. The fourth bus heads to the top of the mountain. But because it’s a less popular route, it doesn’t leave until there are enough passengers. So, I decided to hike to the top instead.
Tip: Depending on the heat, it’s probably better to take that 4th bus to the top, and walk down the mountain instead.
The forest on the hiking trail that hasn’t been clear-cut is nice, but once I come out into the open, the heat is strong, and I need a beer break.
If you’re not hiking up the mountain, the easiest way to get to the secret spot is to go to Entoto Maryam Church via the 4th bus that I didn’t take. From there, follow a wide dirt path through the village behind the church and you’ll eventually come to an open area. I’ve GPS’d the coordinates, so visit couragerepublic.com for the details.
The secret spot was a great escape from the city. If you make it out here, let me know what you think of it.
Here’s where it is on Google Maps. You can see how close it is to Entoto Maryam church.
